Approval for Methanol Fuel Cells and Cartridges on Airplanes Proposed by US Department of Transportation

Ticker Symbol: U:VSPC

PASADENA, Calif., Sept. 25 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- VIASPACE Inc. , a company commercializing fuel cell technologies from NASA announced that the US Department of Transportation has issued proposed rulemaking to allow passengers to carry and use micro fuel cells and methanol fuel cartridges on board airplanes to power their notebook computers and other consumer electronic devices. The proposed rules were published in the Federal Register on September 20, 2007. This rule would make US transport regulations consistent with global regulations adopted by the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) that went into effect on January 1, 2007. A number of other countries including Canada, China, Japan and the United Kingdom have already incorporated this rule into their national standards.

"This is a major step toward commercialization of micro fuel cells, and will help the entire fuel cell industry move forward. Fuel cells are important part of global alternative energy and green energy strategies," reports VIASPACE CEO Dr. Carl Kukkonen. "Our subsidiary company Direct Methanol Fuel Cell Corporation produces fuel cartridges for micro fuel cells. These disposable methanol fuel cartridges provide the liquid energy source which the fuel cell converts into electricity to power a notebook computer or mobile phone. Fuel cartridges are disposable and represent a recurring revenue stream similar to printer cartridges or razor blades. Fuel cartridges are made of recyclable materials, but are not allowed to be refilled by the consumer for safety reasons under recently adopted international safety regulations."

Kukkonen continued, "Direct Methanol Fuel Cell Corporation and other fuel cell companies and industry groups have been working for several years to develop the fuel cell safety codes which have now been published by the International Electric Technical Commission (IEC), obtain approval for airplane use by the International Civil Aviation Organization, and approval by the US Department of Transportation. I want to thank the US Fuel Cell Council, the Japanese Electric Manufacturers Association (JEMA), Underwriters Laboratories, the Canadian Standards Association, the Methanol Institute and colleagues in the portable electronics and fuel cell industry for years of hard work to get to this point. US approval for airplanes is a critical factor for success of the micro fuel cell industry. We are very energized by this development which should accelerate product introduction."

In a recent press release, Methanol Institute President and CEO, John Lynn stated, "For everyone that boards an airplane, safety is of paramount importance... The action by the US DOT is a clear endorsement that fuel cell systems and methanol fuel cartridges can meet the most rigorous safety standards. By clearing this hurdle, travelers all the world over will soon no longer fear the dreaded 'battery low' warnings on their laptop computers. They will simply pop out an empty methanol cartridge and replace it with a fresh one."

The proposed rulemaking issued by the Department of Transportation would allow passengers to carry micro fuel cells in the passenger cabin along with up to two spare fuel cartridges. Hydrogen stored in metal hydrides and some borohydrides were not permitted as these are still under consideration by international authorities.

VIASPACE Patent Application Expands Claims to Humidity Sensing in Automobile Exhaust Systems and Factory Emissions

PASADENA, Calif., Sept. 10 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- VIASPACE Inc. (News......) (BULLETIN BOARD: VSPC), a company that transforms proven space and defense technologies from NASA and the Department of Defense into hardware and software solutions, announced today that its VIASPACE Energy unit filed a patent application for expanded claims for use of its new humidity sensor in the external sensing of humidity in exhaust streams of combustion emission gases and for sensing of humidity within a fuel cell system or a combustion device exhaust system.

The VIASPACE relative humidity sensor, the HS-1000 VIASENSOR, currently measures humidity in gas based fuel cells. VIASPACE Energy's new patent claims expand the field to include measurement of humidity in emissions streams such as auto exhaust gases and smokestacks, and for internal humidity sensing in fuel cell systems or combustion device exhaust systems.

Fuel cells are very sensitive units in regard to the operating level of humidity. If the humidity is too high or too low, the fuel cell will either fail to operate, or operate at an unacceptable level of efficiency for commercial use. The HS-1000 VIASENSOR provides cutting edge, laser based readings of humidity in fuel cells directly from the gas line in near real time. VIASPACE has discovered similar interest in the level of humidity in combustion engine exhaust gases.

Dr. Carl Kukkonen, CEO of VIASPACE, reports, "We have been extremely pleased with the early success of global orders and the extremely high level of market interest in our new humidity instrument, the HS-1000 VIASENSOR. These new patent claims are based on early feedback we have received from discussions with several large automotive manufacturers and major manufacturers of auto industry instrumentation equipment. With this new patent application, we are adding to our existing large intellectual property portfolio concerning alternative energy products.

This patent describes several additional methods to allow consumers to verify the level of humidity within a fuel cell system such as that proposed to power fuel cell or hybrid energy automobiles. The patent further describes use of the device to measure levels of humidity in the emissions of exhaust gases common to combustion engine automobiles that we believe will be extremely valuable in the future. We will be expediting the development of these new versions of our HS-1000 humidity sensor in order to meet what we see as several large new market opportunities in alternative energy products. This patent enables us to rapidly expand our interests in alternative energy products, based on direct feedback of immediate and future needs from potential users."

Tokyo Institute Of Technology Orders VIASPACE Humidity Sensors

PASADENA, Calif., Nov. 12 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- VIASPACE Inc. (News......) (BULLETIN BOARD: VSPC), a company that transforms proven space and defense technologies from NASA and the Department of Defense into hardware and software solutions, announced today that it has shipped two of its VIASENSOR HS-1000 humidity sensors to the Tokyo Institute of Technology in Japan.

The performance of hydrogen fuel cells using a Polymer Electrolyte Membrane (PEM) depends on the moisture level of the membrane. The membrane only conducts protons when it is hydrated or moist. The moisture is provided by water vapor in the incoming air or hydrogen stream. The VIASENSOR HS-1000 humidity instrument provides real-time measurements of the amount of water vapor in these gas streams.

VIASPACE CEO Carl Kukkonen stated, "We are happy to add the Tokyo Institute of Technology to our growing list of VIASENSOR HS-1000 customers. The Tokyo Institute is a world leader in the research and development of hydrogen based fuel cells, and our demonstration of the HS-1000 several weeks ago at their facility resulted in this order. The HS-1000 is a leading edge, laser-based sensor with considerable improvement in accuracy and response time over other available instruments. We feel that the VIASENSOR will help the Tokyo Institute of Technology more rapidly optimize fuel cell designs for their government and commercial research programs in Japan."
