Vanda Pharma. soars after narrower-than-expected 1Q loss

NEW YORK (AP) -- Shares of Vanda Pharmaceuticals surged Friday, a day after the drug developer reported a narrower-than-expected first-quarter loss and an analyst initiated coverage on the stock with a "Buy" rating.

Shares of the Rockville, Md.-based company jumped 43 cents, or 11.9 percent, to $4.05 in afternoon trading. The stock has traded between $2.70 and $22.29 in the past year.

Vanda's loss widened to $19.2 million, or 72 cents per share, from $15.4 million, or 61 cents per share, in the prior-year period. The company attributed the shortfall to higher research and development costs for a late-stage insomnia drug candidate.

Analysts polled by Thomson Financial were expecting a loss of 84 cents.

The company reported no revenue since it has no products on the market.

Caris & Co. analyst David Moskowitz initiated coverage of the stock at "Buy" with a $22 price target.

The analyst said investors should buy shares as the company approaches an expected FDA decision on its schizophrenia drug Fanapta, and prepares to release late-stage data on its insomnia drug candidate in June.

Friedman, Billings, Ramsey & Co. analyst David Amsellem reiterated his "Outperform" or "Buy" rating and $16 price target. He said he is optimistic Fanapta will get approved in July, with a possible launch in the first half of 2009.
