old rises for third day to near $830 on weaker dollar By Moming Zhou Last update: 1:41 p.m. EST Dec. 26, 2007 SAN FRANCISCO (MarketWatch) -- Gold futures rose for a third day to end near $830 an ounce as the dollar fell to its lowest level in nearly two weeks against a basket of other major currencies, increasing the appeal of gold as a safe-haven investment. Gold futures for February delivery closed up $13, or 1.6%, at $829.5 an ounce on the New York Mercantile Exchange. It rose to an intraday high of $830.2 earlier in electronic trading, the highest in a month. The dollar index, which tracks the value of the greenback against a basket of other major currencies, fell for a third day, down 0.6% to 77.14, the lowest level since Dec. 17.
